If you brag, if you’re flashy, if you feel your worth is tied to things , you’re lacking in some area in your life.
We’ve all been guilty, myself included. My twenties were filled with materialism. It tracks. I was young! I had no responsibility. I made great money. I LOVED things!
A friend of mine comes to mind as I write this. Let me set the scene… I’m in my 30’s with a 3 and 7 year old. I’m not struggling financially but I’m living in a rental in a very expensive area in north Orang County. She lived in an extremely nice house, drove a beautiful big SUV, had a huge rock on her finger, and never EVER, EVER bragged about any of it. As a matter of fact, we bonded initially over Dion’s hearing aid. Come to find out, her son was completely deaf. At the time we met, she was a mom of 4, scrambling to do it all just as I was and I only had 2. She was our room mom. She became a confidant. She was completely real, genuine and authentic. She didn’t bullshit. After mymom passed away and my dad’s health had declined, it was her I called to pick me up from Urgent Care when I had pneumonia. My husband was at home with our 3 kids, one of them, an infant while I was at UC. I had no family close to be able to call and I had no ride home. She was a real one. And whether she had millions or nothing, you never would’ve known by her east coast personality.
On the other hand, stuntin’ is tasteless. No one cares about your Michael Kors haul. Don’t get me wrong, he seems very talented! We’ve all been guilty a time or two! Boasting about a big purchase because you’re beyond excited is one thing. I’m convinced most of us have recognized that your value isn’t in what you choose to spend your money on. Invest in yourself! Take a class! Learn a skill. Take care of that gingivitis. No one is noticing that new Louis if your grill is suffering. In fact, they’ll all assume it’s fake. No matter how you try to portray yourself to be a certain way, if it doesn’t line up with reality, people are going to eventually see right through you.
