This weekend is too full for my taste. I LOVE weekends with no commitments. They are so rare.

Saturday brings Saturday school and a medical appointment for one kid, a soccer game and a friend staying with us for another, and 2 soccer games and an end of season pizza party for a third. Additionally, I wanted to walk in the City of Hope: Walk for Hope event happening Sunday. Five of the weekend’s events overlap each other. Having multiple kids is exhausting when I think about the only thing I personally had planned was the walk on Sunday.

My Mom was ALWAYS busy. She had such a full and fancy social schedule. She’d complain about being so busy or not wanting to attend a certain event. I’d invite her to an event for one of my boys and she was usually unavailable. If I asked her why she committed to all these things. She could never answer me.

I used to be like this. And, sometimes I’ll still overcommit. I do spend a lot of time in my car. But, I like being free, or at home with no plans, or wandering around somewhere. One of my favorite things to do is grab a drink and people-watch at Fashion Island or Irvine Spectrum, or really anywhere there’s a lot of people wandering around like me.

I enjoy my kid’s commitments for the most part. I love watching them do what they love. And being their chauffeur keeps me honest. No time for trouble if I’m constantly picking up and dropping off!

This season of life is a short one, I’ve been told. I already have one kid driving which lessens my load but increases my worry. I’m not complaining by any means. But, I also look forward to eating at an acceptable hour, taking up Mahjong or Bunco, and waving to all my neighbors as they take their evening strolls around my block.
